Tucows Gains Market Share: Named Fastest Growing Registrar in Net New Domain Name Registrations
TORONTO, CANADA, Jan. 23, 2002 – Tucows Inc. (OTCBB: TCOW), a leading distributor of e-business services and applications on the Internet, was the fastest-growing registrar in 2001 in net new registrations in .com, .net and .org top-level domains (TLDs), according to SnapNames’ State of the Domain Year-End 2001 report.
State of the Domain, a monthly analysis of the domain name industry, states: “Comparing 2001 to 2000, the fastest-growing registrar on the basis of net new names was OpenSRS/Tucows (620,012 net new).”* According to the report, Tucows was the largest net gainer in the industry with more than 620,000 net new names under management, for a gain in market share of 2.27%. This compares to Verisign (NASDAQ: VRSN), which formerly held the monopoly on registrations in .com, .net and .org, with its loss of more than 2.3 million names and more than 8.5% in market share; and Register.com’s (NASDAQ: RCOM) loss of 335,591 names, or 1.23% in market share.
